Jim started off our project 'Photography in Context' brief on Wednesday, talking about the brief itself and how the course has developed from the Critical Perspectives module it has replaced. Scans of all my notes from the session can be seen below.

The main aim of this new module is to "integrate the process of contemplating and critiquing photography with what it is you produce". You need to know a general overview of different mediums, it's not just all about going out and shooting.

I feel the most important topic we spoke about in the lecture was the action of critically thinking. Every time we read something it's coming from a background and opinion, its not a neutral non-biased source, therefore we need to read things critically and understand them in a more connected and involved way. This module will help enable us to do this, and these skills can also be transferred into critically thinking about our own work as well as others.

I'm feeling pretty excited to start this module because a lot of key texts that we should know and be referencing in response to our work have been highlighted. Through this topic we'll be able to deconstruct them in class in an understandable way and apply the parts that interest me into my own work, hopefully strengthening it.
