On Monday we had our 2/3 flash shoots, this one being located in Millennium Square. The brief that was set was to take photographs of the topic you are most scared of tackling. As soon as I thought about this I knew I was taking portraits of people because it's something I thought I didn't really enjoy and wasn't very good at.
So we set off and I started out taking portraits of the people around me on the course. My contact sheets can be seen down below. Following my mini tutorial with Shawn at the Watershed he said I shouldn't really be taking photos of my friends but strangers instead. So I went back out to shoot again and took some portraits of strangers (these are the last 11 photos on the contact sheet).

Below are some of my favourite photographs from the shoot:

Although this is a photograph from the earlier part of the shoot where I just captured people on the course, I really liked it nonetheless. They're centred with the concrete post in the background and are all comfortably posed. I also love the way the light is coming in from the left of the image, bouncing off their heads. The photo portrays happiness and friendship, which I like.

This photo is one of my favourites out of the four, just because I love the way the subject interacts with the objects in the image. I really like the placement and how they're equally to his left and right. The colours of the flowers in the vase also compliment the beige/brown of his coat and his dark green shirt which I'm fond of.

This is one of the first street portraits I took after the mini tutorial, and I was just pleased they said yes! I think I prefer taking portraits where the subjects are looking at the camera, because the photo is so much more engaging and I feel you can get to know the individual more, even if it is just the version of themselves they present for the camera.

I really like the angle of this image and how the sides of the table point towards the subject in the centre. I also like how he's looking off out of the frame, making the viewer wonder what's outside of the photograph.
Overall I found this second flash shoot really fun and I'm glad I tried something a bit different to my usual photography, because I don't push myself to do this enough. After taking some portraits I found out I actually quite enjoy it and is something I want to start doing more, so I think the flash shoot was very beneficial to my work and I'm excited for the third session!
