40) The Editing Process - 30/11/17

I had a tutorial with Nick where we started to look through my images to make an edit for the zine. Below is a contact sheet of all the final images I chose to narrow down from. It's a mix of images from my 35mm work around Bristol and Paris and then my different studio shoots (the manifesto steps, the vintage sweets and the portraits). We discussed how this was a good mix to work with, and any more would make the zine too busy and I'd have to much work to edit through. This is why I've decided to not shoot anymore, and not go back to the Botanical Gardens or fruit and veg shops. After looking at all these printed images I realised I definitely have enough material to work with without doing more photoshoots.

We laid them all out on the table so we could see them all at once and then picked out the favourites. Pictures of this edit can be seen below. We ended up with around 22 photos altogether.

I agreed with most of the picks, however he did leave out some of my favourite images so I need to consider what really makes me the happiest and what I want to display in my zine through the images. After looking at the photographs we also discussed how I don't think they'll work in this 3 page spread zine format, but would work better in just 1 zine. I'm starting to consider the idea of making the zine in a perfect bound style rather than saddle stitch, so that I have the freedom to play around with different paper types throughout the book, and that way they wouldn't be constrained to specific double page spreads.

I was pleased to get some insight from Nick and see which images he thought were best. I also want to get some other tutors opinions on an edit before I start putting the zine together, so this is my next step.
