46) Front cover ideas for my zine - 7/12/17

When thinking of front cover ideas I knew I wanted to make it engaging for the viewer so they pick up the zine in the first place. My initial ideas can be seen in my notes below, which I will elaborate further on and make a decision in this post.

My two simpler ideas were to incorporate a simple line drawing of a smiley face either on the front cover, or incorporating a smiley face into the name of the zine (3). However I think these ideas are too basic, and I also want to have the title on the inside of the cover not on the front cover. Another idea I thought of was to have a cut out on the front cover with an image of a smile I took showing through from the title page (1). The image I would use can be seen below.

However, I then realised that I used this image in my zine already, meaning I can't really put it on the front cover too, which made me develop the idea further. It made me think that I could have a line drawing of the photograph on the title page to show through to the cut out on the front page (2). That way I can still have the smile but not a duplicate image. So I got one of my friends (Graci) to draw this smile for me (see below) using the Wacom tablet - I'm awful at drawing so I didn't want to, and I also wanted to show a collaboration of work. I think this is the best front cover idea and I'm going to go with it.

I also thought about different coloured covers I could have for the zine. When thinking what would compliment the idea behind the images, I listed different colours that make me think of happiness. For instance, orange, yellow, pink. I think the images overall have a lot of orange colours in them (unintentionally) so I want to play to this and go for a yellow or orange. After looking in the art shop I preferred the yellow paper over the orange, so I've decided to go with that.

Below is my final front cover idea with the drawing and coloured card put together:

I'm so pleased with the final cover, I think it really portrays my idea of happiness and I really like the feature of the cut out with the drawing showing through - I think it looks quite playful and different.
